Dental Implants (Single, Multiple or Full Mouth Rehabilitation)
Dental implants are a great solution when there is a missing tooth or a tooth that needs to be removed. Dental implants can support multiple missing teeth in the form of an implant bridge, or if a person is missing all of their teeth, implants can support both removable or non-removable prosthetics.
What are dental implants?
Dental implants are small, titanium posts that are placed within the jawbone to mimic a natural tooth's root system. The implant acts as the support structure for an implant crown, the part of the implant that will be visible when you speak or smile and supports chewing function. A benefit of a dental implant and crown is that the adjacent teeth are not damaged in the process of restoring the lost tooth, whereas a dental bridge uses the adjacent teeth as support structures.
What happens if I don't replace a missing tooth?
When a tooth is lost, the adjacent teeth may begin to shift and bite changes can occur. More force and pressure may be placed on the remaining teeth that can cause accelerated damage that then also requires treatment. In the missing tooth space, the surrounding bone will also naturally begin to deteriorate over time. If untreated, this can lead to significant bone loss and implants become more unstable and difficult to place. The bone and soft tissue health of the adjacent teeth can also be impacted.
Where implant posts help support the jawbone and prevent the bone and soft tissue from deteriorating, an implant crown helps to support a healthy bite and ensures adjacent teeth remain in their correct position.
How long does the implant process take?
Depending on the situation, an implant most typically needs 3-6 months to integrate into the jawbone. Once stable, an impression can be taken for the implant crown. This process typically takes another 4-6 weeks, as the impression will go to multiple hand-selected USA laboratories to custom make two different parts of the implant crown.
